The Wiener Family has established a fund at the University of California, Berkeley, College of Environmental Design for the purpose of promoting design excellence, technological advancement, social equity, and environmental sustainability in the architecture of public space. With an equal focus on building and landscape, and a commitment to the physical realization of sponsored projects, the fund is intended to help initiate and promote public construction that advances the physical landscape and critical discourse of public space. The primary activity of the fund centers on the sponsorship of a biannual series of competitions leading to awarded design commissions. The fund maintains an international interest in its range of projects and topics. Competition topics focus on important design issues in the progressive interaction of human society, technology and nature. In addition to the competitions themselves, the fund supports related events, projects and publications critically engaging public participation in the design of public architecture. The current series of competitions and events carries the title, PublicMaking, emphasizing the physical making of innovative projects in the public realm.
