cal sailing club design / build studio
This studio will be conducted as a group project to design and build a small building on the Berkeley waterfront. Cal Sailing is a non-profit sailing club offering affordable access to sailing and wind surfing activities, and conducting City of Berkeley sponsored youth sailing programs. This organization has commissioned and funded our studio to work with them in designing a new site plan, designing a relatively small new clubhouse, and then working with their membership to complete the construction of the project during the course of the semester. The studio will lead and participate in a comprehensive and exciting process of client meetings, design, detailing, budgeting, and hands-on construction work, bringing an architecture project from conception to completion in a tight time schedule.
The studio will follow 4 phases: 1. Initial research and object fabrication—client meetings, sailing, investigation of forces and attributes of land, sea and air; 2. Site planning and conceptual design—individual and small group design projects; 3. Clubhouse design—individually developed design and management roles within a group design process; 4. Clubhouse construction—individually developed construction and management roles within a group construction project.
There will be large expectations of group coordination and work outside the scheduled studio hours, including weekend time, and studio members will be expected to work together as a cohesive, internally organized project team. This will be a fun project with high ambitions for design creativity and construction quality, and will require a strong commitment of time, energy and cooperative enthusiasm for group work.
